Time Really Does Fly😞😪

Graduation is almost here.... Don't mind me I'm just balling my eyes out as I'm typing this. I don't want to grow up quite yet😞😞😞

Final Essay/Assignment

In early August of 2014, I, Stevie Wisz, was very hesitant and sketchy about taking this course. "You can do anything you want; have your phone out, relate to and connect with the teacher, and basically are free to "do" you." Hearing these words were abnormal because in the traditional school setting of modern day school is nothing like that. In almost every classroom setting there is the teacher who acts the authority figure demanding and forcing the students to complete "core" assignments for a letter grade. When previous students told me that this class was nothing like the "traditional" class, I was really nervous. I didn't know what to expect because of the fact that I, along with all of the people I have gone to school with since day one, have been conditioned and trained to work and fit into the traditional, letter grade based schooling. As time went by and I was exposed to the intense amount of freedom and creativity this course provides, everything changed. I loved it. I was no longer restricted to the assignments the teacher assigned. I was able to both do assignments that I had great interest in as well as those that you assigned. I could freely express myself and my work via blog which I loved. Everything that the previous students told me about your class was true and awesome. This is the story of my own bildungsroman in which I transformed into a shy, reserved girl who hated to have her work seen by others to a confident, anxious girl who urges for feedback and insight on publishing's I revealed on my blog.

Granted by Dr. Preston himself, I have been treated as a colleague and as well as been given a great deal of choice in the course which represents a high level of trust. Because we have all been conditioned to the traditional, point-letter grade-based classroom setting, I believe my classmates and I all deserved this freedom. It enabled us to freely express ourselves and as well as our passions to the external world and classroom when we weren't allowed to before. Because of this power and freedom, I met and learned so much about so many of my classmates in this class than ever before. As the year progressed I did notice that some individuals took advantage of the freedom and didn't complete all of what Dr. Preston assigned, although I still believe that the freedom granted was deserved even though they "checked out." Throughout the entire year, especially while presenting our masterpieces, my classmates and I honored the freedom and trust. We were finally granted the ability to show our classmates our true selves without the fear of being judged. Having a teacher that encourages and supports expressing oneself is rare and I believe that this course is specifically special and unique because of the fact that the "teacher" is one of the rare and unusual ones. Without this course, I would have never overcame my fear of expressing my true self and I am so thankful for this course!

Out of all of the works we read and authors we studied, I would have to say Shakespeare's Hamlet rang true enough o make me feel like they described parts of me and my journey in life. Although, Macbeth had a similar affect on me like Hamlet did and that is because in both stories Shakespeare featured an individual who struggles internally and my life has basically been an internal struggle because of my heart disease and insecurities. Lastly, Great Expectations was a story that represented me and my journey because it is based upon a belittled man who then grows and develops into a matured individual. Over the duration of my life, I have been so conflicted and exposed to hurt and pain that I struggled with determining who I wanted to be in the future. I loved Great Expectations because it taught me that not all things special and important are money and wealth but can be as small as love.

Because of my heart disease, I have always been passionate about the medical field and becoming a doctor of some sort. Although, this course, because of the Masterpiece assignment, has strengthened my passion for the medical field and ignited the spark/drive inside me to make my dream of becoming a doctor come true. Thanks to my masterpiece I have reconsidered what kind of doctor I want to be and that is to be a Pediatric Cardiologist rather than a regular Cardiologist. This is because I feel that I will benefit more from satisfying and making children healthier than older folks. To make it happen, I will continue to do all of the schooling it takes to reach my goal and become a doctor. I am so excited to pursue a career I love and am passionate about.

Something in this course that has made me literally laugh out loud was Joey Beulow's Masterpiece presentation. The images he photo-shopped and edited were absolutely awesome and hilarious. Specifically the image of you with the statement concerning Open Source Learning!

A unifying theme that ran through some of the Masterpiece presentations were "The smallest acts of kindness are more than the grandest intentions." My masterpiece, Elizabeth's, Courtney's, Melissa's, and Victoria's all portrayed this theme in which all of us girls focused on making others feel better about themselves and their lives. We were not doing the masterpiece for us or for the content of the project, but yet we were doing it for others which makes it all worth it. It is an amazing feeling knowing your actions, words, or behaviors positively impact others and that is what we all elaborated on via our Masterpieces. For instance, my masterpiece was donating gift bags to the ill children in the hospital. Seeing the grins on the sick, kids faces was what made all of the struggle and business worth the while. Courtney's fits into the theme in which her aspirations were to make the Mentally Disabled feel "normal" and "special" which those individuals do not get a lot. They are often belittled and made fun of because of their illness but what Courtney did is make them feel GOOD about themselves by assisting them be successful in a community soccer game! Elizabeth's hair donation was very generous and giving. By chopping off her own, long, beautiful hair she provides a ill, hairless child somewhere in the world with a wig so that they will no longer have to feel "naked" or "ugly" with no hair. Melissa and Victoria's presentation fit along with the theme because by going out and interacting with strangers and the homeless, they made those individuals feel as if they weren't invisible any longer and that they actually have a purpose in the world! <3 I loved all of our Masterpieces because not only did they make us feel good and happy but others too!

Honestly, I do not see myself as a hero, yet. Because my life has only been existing for a short eighteen years, I have not been granted nor been exposed to the instant where I will become the hero I have always wanted and aimed to be. My goals are by becoming a doctor for the purpose of giving back to all who have helped me in my journey, I will eventually be acknowledged and appreciated by my patients who will then visualize me as a hero for keeping them alive and healthy.

Writing this essay, I began to cry. Not because its sad or anything but simply because this is the last assignment I will do in this class which means high school is almost over. I have gone through so much, lost yet gained so many friends, formed new relationships with teachers and peers, and loved every minute of it over the last four years of high school. I loved Righetti, still do and always will. All of my teachers and friends have contributed to who I am today and I am so blessed for that. Graduating from high school bookmarks a new chapter in all of our lives as we begin our journey to college as well as what we do after college. I know all of us will do just fine and be ever more successful in our near journeys. Who ever is reading this, I wish you the best of luck in your future and don't forget to remember me! Such a bittersweet moment in our lives. Thank you Righetti, thank you friends, thank you Dr. Preston, and lastly, thank you Stevie Wisz. <3

Poem Analysis

Because there is a cupplet (change in tone and rhyming scheme) in the poem, we can conclude that the poem is a Shakespearean poem. Throughout the poem, up until the last two lines, Shakespeare insults the woman portrayed by comparing bright, nice things to her dull, lesser self. "And in some perfumes is there more delight then in the breath they from my mistress reeks." The insults continue until the last two lines where it is then he does a complete 180 and portrays something that isn't insulting. He goes on in the last two lines to appreciate the lady and comment on his love for her and her imperfections that he listed previously in the poem.

ACT 4 STUDY QUESTIONS

4.2
1.  There are 3 witches in this scene.
2.  The first apparition says to be wary of Macduff and careful of him.  The second tells Macbeth he should be a strong willed ruler- bold and brace.  In other words he should not accept defeat.  The third warns of attacking armies coming, and tells Macbeth he won't be defeated until the kingdom of Norway attacks.
Macbeth doesn't feel safe after the apparitions.  He has worries about Macduff's intentions and the possibility of an oncoming attacking army.  Yes he should feel unsafe because he is in a very precarious position.
After the fourth, the line of kings, Macbeth is terrified.  He saw the ghost of Banquo at the end, whom he killed.  This frightened him as well as drawing out his guilt.
3.  In line 158 Macbeth learns from Lennox that Macduff is running away to England.  In response Macbeth decides to send someone try to kill as many of Macduff's family members as he can.
4.2
1) Lady McDuff seems to feel betrayed and angry at McDuff because he left them (her and her son) to die. She was advising her son to dislike his father because he fled when he discovered that Macbeth is planning to kill him.
2) The purpose of the scene between Lady McDuff and her son is to have his son have false impression about his dad. Also, the scene assists in the growth of the theme : fair is foul and foul is fair. This is because Macbeth is willing to kill McDuff in order to achieve what is"rightfully" his and McDuff fled, afraid of Macbeth's actions towards him. It also shows how McDuff's son refused to believe that his father left them to die, showing devotion, faith, and trust.
3) The entire McDuff family ends up being killed by Macbeth.
4.3
1. Macduff's family has been killed.
2. Malcolm doesn't want to go home because he's afraid of judgement since he ran away. Malcolm is suspicious of Macduff bc Macduff has his own personal agenda. He might be secretly working for Macbeth since he left his family. Malcolm tests Macduff's loyalty to him and he passes. When Macduff starts to leave Malcolm takes back the lies he's told and trusts Macduff now- they're now allies.
3. Malcolm says he's a bad king but Macduff says Macbeth is a way worse king and that he needs to return to restore peace and justice. Avarice bothers Macduff more in a king, it sticks deeper with kings in the terms of greed and lust.
5 coming soon...
6. Ross tells Macduff that his family is dead, it takes him a while to tell him. Macduff says they must save their grief for later and Malcom says to turn their revenge into a medicine for their grief. Macduff says "he has no children" and he is referring to Malcom because he says he needs to mourn and "feel like a man" when Malcom tells him to dispute it like a man. To be a "man" in this play means to have feelings and don't hide but don't let them cloud your judgement.
7. Malcom, Macduff and Ross are ready to attack Macbeth's castle, they just need to go there

Act 2 Study Questions

Act 2
2.1
1.The opening gives a sense of forboding, things are not as they should be. The discussion serves to have Banquo acknowledge the weird sisters rather than claim they are a hallucination.
2. Macbeth is extremely stressed about having to Duncan and he is attempting to talk himself into committing the deed. He talks about it as if he is in a haze, a dream and he continues by making it a reality and committing the deed.
2.2
1. Lady Mac's state of mind is kind of heartless because of the focus she is putting into the task at hand. She has drugged the guards that stand at Duncan's chambers and put daggers in their hands to frame them as the murderers of Duncan. Lady Mac is assuming that Macbeth is in the act of killing Duncan and she didn't do it herself because she didn't want the guards to wake up and see her.
2. Macbeth has done the dirty deed of killing Duncan. Macbeth has a moment of self reflection as he looks at his bloodstained hands holding the dagger. He guiltily comments about his actions and worries that Donalbain heard the ruckus. Lady Mac replies by saying Macbeth shouldn't be so childish and scared. The problem that arises is that Macbeth thinks he heard a voice say that he would be killed for what he did. Lady Mac tries to calm him down and rationalize the situation.
2.3
2.3 1) The porter, in the third scene of act ii, is drunk and is pretending to be the Porter of the gate to hell. In the play, Macbeth has the trait of equivocation, where he manipulates his listener by circumlocution and the expectations of the other person without actually committing. For example, he does this when Lady Macbeth asks him to kill King Duncan.
2) The thematic function of Lennox describing the night as unruly was because that night was when King Duncan was killed by Macbeth. It was "unruly" not only for King Duncan but also for Macbeth because the guilt and fear of getting caught will always make him say and do things that might be suspicious, dark, and unruly. The scene is necessary to show Macbeth's transformation from the character before the murder vs. the character after the murder. This also connects back to what the witches had said earlier in the play: Fair is foul and foul is fair.
3) Macduff reports that the king has been murdered. Lady Macbeth appears to be horrified that this act could take place on his household. Macbeth is in encaged and kills the chamberlains. Malcolm and Donalbain decide to flee Malcolm and will go to England and Donalbain will go to Ireland. They're fleeing because they fear they will be murdered.
2.4
1. The function of the dialogue between Old Man and Ross is to discuss the strange happenings that have been occurring such as how an owl killed a falcon, the horses went wild and are one another, and several other things.  This wicked behavior symbolizes and foreshadows the promotion of Macbeth to the thrown.
2. Macduff tells us from the castle that Macbeth has been made king by his fellow lords and that he will travel to Scone to receive the promotion and get crowned. He tells us that Malcolm and Donalbain are suspected of the murder of Duncan. They are suspected because they fled the scene.

Poor Research Done by Yours Truly, Stevie Wisz

Well, today I finally received an email back from the St. Jude's hospital in Irvine and was told that their specific hospital did not have a pediatric center. SOOOO.... as a back up plan we will now be headed to the pediatric center at UCLA medical hospital. This change does nothing negative to the experience/masterpiece, if anything, I'd say it enhances it because UCLA has an awesome hospital and takes awesome care of their patients. Sorry for the inconvenience but lets still make the best out of this awesome event :))

Macbeth....

1. Answer this question on your course blog:  Imagine how the plot, theme, and tone of Macbeth would be different if Macbeth could gain more power by becoming good at something or learning something, rather than benefiting through another's loss.

The play as a whole would be different if Macbeth could gain more power by becoming good at something or learning something rather than benefitting through another's loss. The play is structured around a negative ambition of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and the violence it brings. If this were to be replaced with a positive ambition such as if Macbeth defeated the previous king in a sword fight to gain the thrown or something in that area then the novel would be just like any ordinary story that has a sweet, happy ending. That is not what Shakespeare wanted nor known for. He was one who's stories intrigued the audience because of the fact that his pieces weren't like all of the ones previous, they were DIFFERENT. If he wanted to be just like every author  before him he would have portrayed Macbeth as a character who experiences little conflict or flaw and that's too boring. Shakespeare's intent is to depict characters and stories where conflict and violence is the only thing the audience gets to be exposed and related to. The story would signify nothing if Macbeth gained more power by becoming good at something or learning something rather than benefitting through the loss of one of his peers. The desparity and danger Shakespeare exploits in the play is what sets it apart from all the rest and it is what makes it interesting/fun to read.

Help with Macbeth

Over the past week, I have been absolutely slammed with things to do. Whether its running errands, doing homework, going to softball, or dealing with my pig, I have had little if any time to really dig deep into Macbeth. Like any other Sunday, I sit at my desk from 10:30 A.M. until 8 P.M. and catch up on work and myself. Today, my main priority is to really get exposed to Macbeth and comprehend the play. As I had finished reading Act III, I felt as if my own comprehensions of the play were missing some things and somewhat incorrect. So, to help me better understand the complex play, I thought it would be beneficial to look up students' blogs from previous years and read their notes on the play. After looking at 5-10 blogs I felt as if i knew the play so much better than I did before. So, in case anyone is in the same boat i am, I am going to post below the notes that I found really helpful. This isn't plagiarism or me trying to cheat, it's me simply trying to improve my knowledge on a complex piece of work written by Shakespeare.

Miranda Nillo's Notes

Act III-
Scene 1:
Why is the attendant all capitalized?
Macbeth is describing banquo in a threat and e wants to kill banquo. This is guilt building up and Macbeth is going off the rails. (Direct characterization) violent and brutal and honorable to murdering Duncan and making people into enemies so he turns into a sociopath. Character development and evolution. This shows him punishing himself. Diseased.
Witches give suggestions not orders.
Convinces them to kill banquo by saying banquo was better than you and not equal and stuff. Says this to murderers.
Scene 2:
Scene 3: banquo dies
Scene 4: "banquos safe" meaning he is dead
Safe= secured. Look back to fair is foul and foul is fair. So like look again at things said. Witches said banquo would be father of kings. Macbeth needed to kill fleance so family relatives don't come back. Banquo's ghost comes. Ghost is in MacBeths head. More about schitzophrania. He is talking to banquo. Lady Macbeth is questioning his mascunality and verbally abusing him.
Scene V:
Heckade guide to witches or adviser
Scolding the three witches for talking to Macbeth, and should be knowing that humans are weak, and that they talked to him in the way that didn't show there full potential of power. Heckade now has to go and sort everything out and manipulate MacBeths perceptions on thing. Macbeth will start acting more like a killer.

Kelsey Robertson's Notes

Kelly, Maddi and I got together and read Macbeth, pausing to ask each other questions and determine meaning in Shakespeare's words. These are those notes.

Act I Scene IV

-Duncan trusted the Thane of Cawdor to run the army but fled and was a traitor

-Duncan (The king) found this out from Malcom who heard it from another dude.

-Duncan was all sad that he had put so much of his trust in that dude

-Thane of Cawdor died on the battlefield a traitor, Duncan gives Malcom the role of Prince of

Cumberland.

Questions:

Exact translation of dialogue between two might be needed for more depth, but otherwise we

understood the general idea

Act I Scene V

Lady Macbeth

-Witches told her about Macbeth’s future and fortune

-She gets all excited and then worried her hubby is “too full of the milk of human kindness” to

get all the fortune and do what he needs to do

-Ironic at this point because Macbeth was introduced as a crazy killer dude, and now his wife is

saying he’s too much of a sweetie to be the king

-Messenger comes by and tells Lady that the king is coming (because the Thane of Cawdor died

and Macbeth was made the new one) and Lady is all EHMEHGEHD better get ready

-She decides to get all cray cray and unsex herself saying “make my blood thick” so that she can

be the man for Macbeth

Macbeth shows up

-Macbeth and the queen conspire to kill the king

-decide to put on faces that they’re super innocent but really the evil serpent on the inside

Act I Scene VI

Rando’s Chatting

-The air is clean, guilt free, allusions to the air about to get real thick with guilt and death

-Lady Macbeth is busy sucking up to everyone in the castle

Act I Scene VII

Macbeth talking

-Gives soliloqouy about killing the king, trying to rationalize it for himself.

-Decides it will be a quick assassination, and that Duncan isn’t a great king anyways, but all of his virtues

will be remembered so he’ll go to heaven. (Therefore its totally chill to kill someone)

-Tells himself that the king has put Macbeth on to kill him unknowingly, because he made Macbeth the

Thane of Cawdor so how could he not continue with the prophecy??

Lady Macbeth arrives

-Lady Macbeth is annoyed with her girl husband. Wants him to go ahead and do the deed. Kill

the dude (Just kill deh dude *insert singing crab*)

-Comments on his attire being all stupid, basically insults him until Macbeth has to get all mad

and defend himself and then go kill the king.

-She says she super manly, and if a baby were sucking her milk she’d “pluck thy nipple from his

boneless head and dash’d the brains out.” So she’s like real scary, and real serious now.

-The guards will be the bearer of the “guilt”, in other words they’re framing the murder on the guardsby

killing the king with their daggers and leaving them in the guard’s hands

-Lady Macbeth drugs them with wine

Act II Scene I

People Chatting, Macbeth comes in

-Small talk about whatever, (?) they leave

-Macbeth gives a post-kill soliloquy, “Tarquin’s ravishing strides towards his design” an allusion

to Tarquin who killed Tullis (?) in order to rule rome, and then got kicked out of rome. Macbeth doesn’t

want to be exiled, reference to greek history.

Act II Scene II

Lady Macbeth

-Lady is all mad cause Macbeth brought the daggers back with him

-She has to go put them back herself

-A knocking keeps sounding and both Lady and Macbeth hear it.

Act II Scene III

-Also hears the knocking, explains that perhaps the knocking his the feeling of guilt, getting

louder and louder in their lives

about it, and that Duncan was such a great guy.

-Donalbain and Malcom decide to leave the scene and retreat to different countries until they

find out what happened to their father.

Act III Scene I

-Macbeth is suspicious of Banquo after he questioned when his sons will get their “fortune” and
